The recession is continuing to hit the games industry hard, and now both Sony and Microsoft have announced major reductions and restructuring plans to deal with the financial downturn.

Kotaku reports that Microsoft is cutting 1,400 jobs today and plans to reduce another 3,600 over the next year and a half. Departments hit will be R&D, marketing, sales, finance, legal, HR, and IT. Microsoft didn’t give word if this will impact the Xbox division. Despite growth by the entertainment and devices division, of which the Xbox is a part, the company as a whole has seen an 11% drop in net income. 

Meanwhile, Reuters gives word of a $2.9 billion operating loss for Sony, which has resulted in a restructuring plan for the company. This loss is more than double the $1.1 billion loss predicted earlier this month. Like Microsoft, it’s hard to tell how much this will directly impact the PlayStation division, but Sony’s sweeping structural changes include “headcount reductions,” as well as cuts to development and production costs for their various products. This doesn’t seem as dire as the reports that entire divisions would be shuttered, but it’s certainly not welcome news for Sony employees. 

“While we are not immune to the effects of the economy, I am confident in the strength of our product portfolio and soundness of our approach,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Sony CEO Howard Stringer made similar comments, saying “While these are extremely challenging times, we must be fully prepared to embrace the opportunities that await us once these dark economic clouds begin to part.”

I try to search around the solution of how to copy and update certain data from table1 to table2. But always cannot remember it and keey search it again and again even I did it several time.

So rather then always search it in Google, I just copy it here to share and keep it as the part of my e-library.

SQL Syntax as below:

UPDATE t1
SET col2 = t2.col2
FROM table1 t1 inner join table2 t2 on t1.col1=t1.col2
WHERE Col3 >5

What the above SQL did was it copy the certain data in table2 and update to the field table1 base on the search query in the where.

Finally Window 7 beta has been officially announce in Malaysia yesterday (6 Jan 2009) after the announcement make at CES by Steve Ballmer few days ago.

Microsoft emphasised on backwards compatibility for end-user, as they demoed the Microsoft Word 97 being able to run Windows 7. Several UI improvements such as the intelligent show desktop key- hovering over it will hide the opened windows but not close them down (the outline of the windows can still be seen). Internet Explorer 8 will also come bundled with Windows 7.  

Windows 7 also sees improvement for software developers and server administrators.  

The beta version of Windows 7, Microsoft’s next-generation PC operating system, can be downloaded today by MSDN, TechBeta and TechNet customers. Consumers who want to test-drive the beta will be able to download it beginning January 9 at http://www.microsoft.com/windows7.  

Microsoft execs refused to confirm a release date, but hinted that the Windows 7 could be released on 2010.

Today I only found out that actually we can customize the detail to show in window explorer when we switch the view mode to detail (right click -> View -> Detail).

You may either right click on the top of the window folder bar and it will show all the possible detail that you can add to your window explorer. If you want more, you can click on the [More...]

Micorosoft has start their work to step into the world of blog. They had annouce thier first open source blog engine call Oxite.  Currently it still under the Alpha Vesion.

What is Oxite?

First of all, Oxite is a blog engine that build base on the ASP.NET MVC Framework(Model View Controller) and it is “an open source, standards compliant, and highly extensible content management platform that can run anything from blogs to big web sites.”

It’s not a competitor to WordPress, MovableType, Drupal, or any other completed blogging front end or CMS. It’s not meant to be any of those. It’s meant to be a code sample, a foundation, a building block for those looking to create something like WordPress for their own sites. According to Jeff Sandquist of Channel 8, 9, 10, and MIX Online fame, “it is a developer sample. period.”
