Opera has just announced that the latest developer version of its browser will feature an integrated VPN client that’s completely free and unlimited to use.

Opera said that the decision behind this move was to improve the security of its users. By using the VPN, users can shield their browsing habits and data from snoopers when using public Wi-Fi. Using a VPN will also mask users’ IP address and allow users to bypass website restrictions, such as accessing content that they are normally unable to from their office or country.

To enable this feature, simply go to the “Settings” on Windows or “Preferences” on Mac, and turn on VPN in the “Privacy & security” tab.

Take note though, this new VPN feature is available only in latest developer version of Opera. That said, Opera plans to offer it on the public release version of their browser app in the near future.

Google default search engine for ios

It looks like Google is willing to go to great lengths to keep their search engine at the top of the list in the mobile platform. So much so that they have agreed to share a percentage of their revenue with Apple to keep their search bar up, front, and center.

This is according Annette Hurst, Oracle’s attorney during a hearing in federal court. She specified that at one point in time, the revenue share was 34 percent, and in 2014, Google paid Apple US$1 billion.

Oracle Corp.’s filed a copyright lawsuit against the search engine giant in 2010 over claims that Google used its Java software without paying for it to develop Android. The damages Oracle seeks may exceed US$1 billion since it expanded its claims to cover newer Android versions.

According to Bloomberg, the transcript containing this information has vanished without a trace from electronic court records. This is no surprise as Google has requested for the transcript to be blocked saying the disclosure could severely affect its ability to negotiate similar agreements with other companies. Although the request was denied by the magistrate judge.

“The specific financial terms of Google’s agreement with Apple are highly sensitive to both Google and Apple. Both Apple and Google have always treated this information as extremely confidential,” said Google in their filing.

Google Chrome for iOS

By on June 29, 2012

Google Chrome browser finally comes into your iOS devices. Google made its announcement on Thursday as part of its annual Google I/O conference in San Francisco. Chrome for iOS immediately available for download in Apps Store for iPad, iPhone, and iPod (Only available for those iOS devices runs iOS 4.3+) after the announcement.

Chromes for iOS doesn’t use the V8 JavaScript engine and it’s have to rely on Safari’s old JavaScript engine. The bad news for Chrome and all the other third-party apps is that they can’t use Apple’s fast Nitro JavaScript engine and the only app that can use it is Safari. That means Chrome on iOS is slower than Safari and slower than Chrome on Android.

This is because Apple’s policies don’t allow Google to use its own JavaScript engine or even Safari’s fast JavaScript engine.

But the good thing is Chrome for iOS allow user to sync tabs between their computer, Android devices, and iOS devices. Besides that, it also come with incognito mode, Google voice search and allows you to open multiple tabs. Other than that, the look and feel of the Chrome browser in iOS more or less the same as what you use in your other devices.

You can view your Google chrome detail in other devices

When Google first release their Chrome Browser few years back, very less number of people would expected that the new browser will become more popular than Firefox and Internet Explorer, but after few years in the market, Google prove to the world that they can make even better browser than other people. Little Firefox

Facebook’s recent acquisition of Instagram for US$1 billion shocked many ardent fans of the popular photo-sharing app. In hindsight, Facebook’s exorbitant buy-over makes sense on number of counts, since Instagram might eventually prove to be a thorn in their side, and also considering that Facebook is trying to safeguard their own photo-sharing interests and maybe build upon its services with Instagram on their side.

What’s apparent, however, is that the once desktop-centric social networking giant is now under pressure to monetize profits from the increasing number of mobile users. And according to Reuters’ report, Facebook is now allegedly eyeing Opera Software with yet another staggering US$1 billion takeover.

Surfing the web via a mobile phone can be a slow and frustrating process, and Opera’s mobile web browser is known to optimize loading times with its own compression techniques to make the surfing experience as expeditious as possible. This bodes well for consumers too, since they’re likely to pay less for data charges with smaller compressed files to download. Opera is also said to have ‘the technology to better display ads’, which would assist Facebook to some extent in transforming increasing traffic on mobile platforms to tangible dividends.

Arctic Securities, an employee-owned investment bank, told Reuters: “Opera would be sensible for Facebook on several levels. It would enhance the now limited mobile experience of Facebook, improve Facebook’s mobile monetization problem, help Facebook retain online game developers leaving the social network over the lack of a mobile platform and further improve Facebook’s ability to target ads.”

However, it is unlikely that Google would sit idly by in light of Facebook’s intentions. Google is Opera’s search partner for Opera Mobile and Opera Mini, and if anything, we’re guessing that the search giant themselves might be making a larger bid for Opera before Facebook gets to acquire the web browser company.

Firefox 11 Hits the Streets

By on March 19, 2012

Mozilla’s Firefox hit its tenth incarnation not too long ago at the end of January, and the team over there has been hard at work improving the browser.

And before you know it, Mozilla has released version 11. Besides including various security fixes, the new version now allows users to migrate bookmarks, history, and cookies from Google Chrome. Another useful improvement is the ability to sync add-ons across multiple computers.

And if you’re a developer, there’s also some interesting upgrades from the previous version, with version 11 allowing developers to change code in real-time via the CSS Style Editor located within the browser. The newly added Page Inspector also allows developers to take a look at a web page’s structure and layout without having to leave the browser.
