It has been discovered that torrent site The Pirate Bay has been operating a cryptocurrency miner. The site’s visitors learned that The Pirate Bay exploits a user’s CPU to mine Monero digital coins, through JavaScript code found on the torrent site.

When users browsed specific pages on The Pirate Bay, they found a significant increase in their CPU usage before finding out that a Bitcoin miner had been embedded on the site. The miner, powered by  Coinhive, allows users to turn CPU usage into Monero coins.

While this only happens in category listings and search results, many users are not happy with The Pirate Bay’s move. The Pirate Bay confirmed that it was testing the miner temporarily as an alternative method to gain revenue.

However, users may stop the miner from utilizing their processors by disabling or blocking JavaScript, running blocker add-ons like NoScript or by using an ad-blocker to block the miner URL.

A thriving app ecosystem is vital to the success of a mobile device and it seems that the Apple Watch has what it takes to succeed.

Aside from the plans to launch the Apple Watch in more countries by late June, Apple CEO Tim Cook also revealed that there are over 3,500 apps available for the wearable device. The interest and response from developers have been overwhelming, which helped Apple exceed its own expectations.

TechCrunch – “We’re far ahead from where we expected to be from an application point of view,” Cook said in today’s briefing. “We had an internal goal of beating that 1,000 [that the iPad had] and we exceeded that.”

It is noteworthy to mention that developers were only allowed to start submitting their apps for approval from March 31st and within a month, there are already more than 3,500 apps designed specifically for the Apple Watch. To put that into context, the first generation iPhone and iPad launched with 500 and 1,000 apps respectively. Here are the app numbers at launch for some of its rivals:

  • Samsung Galaxy Gear – at least 70 apps
  • Pebble – more than 1,000 with the launch of the Pebble App Store
  • Sony Smart Watch 2 – more than 300 apps

The Apple Watch App Store currently has a variety of categories such as communication, family, work, travel, creativity and health & fitness. If you are one of the fortunate ones to have received your Apple Watch, do check out the App Store and try the apps out.

Low Orbit Ion Cannon (LOIC) is an open source network stress testing and Distributed Denail Of Service (DDOS) attack tools. LOIC was initially developed by Praetox Technologies, but was later released into the public domain, and now is hosted on several open source platforms. It’s named after a fictitious weapon from the Command & Conquer series of video games.

The tools come in 2 difference language which are C# and Java. The LOIC not only available in Window Platform, it also available in Andiod platform which you can easily launch any attack to the target machine just using your own mobile phone or tablet which I think may not that efficial 🙂

The Windows version of LOIC has a “Hive mind” feature that lets you point your copy at an TCP, UDP, or HTTP, allowing someone else to control over your LOIC clients application which website they are target to. This is because if you are attacking a website alone using your own computer at your own network, that’s actually no impact to the server at all, but if there are thousands of LOICs all targeting to a same server at the same time than only can bring the real negetive impact to the target machine.

LOIC basically turns your computer’s network connection into a firehose of garbage requests, directed towards a target web server. On its own, one computer rarely generates enough TCP, UDP, or HTTP requests at once to overwhelm a web server—garbage requests can easily ignored while legit requests for web pages are responded to as normal.

There is a bad side for the hackers that you may not know to take control over your computer may be a risk. But because the LOIC client is open source, the chances that a virus or backdoor into a user’s own system could be a hidden payload is minimal.

Because a DDoS knocks everything offline—at least when it works as intended—the log files that would normally record each incoming connection typically just don’t work. And even if they do, many LOIC users claim that another user was on their network or that their machine was part of a bot net—a DDoS client delivered by virus that performs like a hive mind LOIC, minus the computer owner actually knowing they are participating.

QVOD (Quick Video On Demand) is an all in one media player where you can play almost all the video file available out site as well as download it to your local computer. The following are some of the features for the QVOD:

  • Quick downloads – the rate of download seems much quicker than PPS.
  • Plenty of choice – there are plenty of websites that service this application, although mostly are the Chinese websites.
  • Watch videos online – watch videos whilst it is still downloading and the output is pretty smooth provided there is enough data buffered. Videos can be watched within the web browser or in the QVOD player itself.
  • Multiple downloads – more than one file can be downloaded at the same time.
  • The down side of using some these Chinese websites to download videos like is as follows:
    • Incorrect language labelling – quite a few dramas labelled Cantonese are found to be Mandarin dubs, best to watch the first couple of minutes just to verify.
    • Too many lines of subtitles – some videos have several lines of subtitles that encompass several languages and end up obscuring the picture
    • Font subtitles too big – some subtitles have the font set too big and end up obscuring the picture
    • Incorrectly translated subtitles – some subtitles are incorrectly translated
    • Mostly of the Hong Kong drama are converted into Manderine

You also can download and watch the movie on your table as currently QVOD supported most of the device running on Window Tablet, iOS, Andriod and also Window Phone.

In my experience, it is a hit and miss with Chinese websites. You are most likely to get good quality dramas that are available in HD in comparison to films. Although there are some down sides, but it tend to continue to use QVOD mainly because it is fast and convenient. Vimeo has launched an update to its iPhone app, and this is much more than just an update. In fact, you could say that the Vimeo iPhone app has been re-imagined from top to bottom, creating what amounts to a brand new app. If you’ve found previous versions of Vimeo confusing and cluttered, the new version has finally gone for the traditional tabbed interface we’ve come to know and love, thus creating a browsing experience that should be much more intuitive.

Aside from interface, the new app can still do everything the old Vimeo could – you can shoot videos or upload videos from your camera reel, browse other videos, comment, like, etc. The new app adds better sharing integration, with easy sharing on Facebook, Twitter, email, iMessage, or via a link. You can also set automatic sharing for every video you upload, and continue watching other videos while your video is uploading.

The new tabbed interface includes the new Feed option, the Explore tab, and your Watch Later queue, which you can also manage as you wish. While the new version of the app claims to be available for both iPhone and iPad, the new interface is notably missing from the iPad, which, upon downloading the new app, still features the old, somewhat cluttered Vimeo interface.

You can download the new Vimeo for iPhone from the App Store. Please do share you thinking after the use.
