A month ago, Maxis Berhad collaborated with local digital platform, Xentral Methods Sdn Bhd (e-Sentral) and organized an ebook writing competition. So after a month of accepting works from local aspiring authors, Maxis has announced that these ebooks are now available for preview and free downloads from the Maxis ebook service at and e-Sentral’s website until April 25, 2013.

Besides allowing the public to get their hands on some interesting ebooks, Maxis will also use this platform to determine the winners of the competition as the authors of the five most downloaded ebooks will receive an iPad each, while the author of the most downloaded book will receive a Professional Editorial and Publishing Consultation on how to publish and commercialize their work on digital platforms.

Maxis is set to launch their 4G LTE

By on December 14, 2012

Maxis LTE

After two long years of trials, Maxis has finally announced that it is set to launch its 4G LTE service so Malaysians can enjoy even faster network speeds. This announcement follows the allocation of the 2600 MHz spectrum band for 4G LTE by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on December 5, 2012.

The LTE service will offer download speeds that are 10 times faster than 3G and will still work seamlessly with this standard. And since there are 5,200 sites providing 3G and HSPA+ coverage, users will still be able to enjoy their 4G LTE devices even when they are outside the 4G LTE area.

Sandip Das, Chief Executive Officer, Maxis commented, “Maxis was the first telco in Malaysia to complete extensive LTE field trials. We have been trialling 4G LTE for 2 years and conducting extensive LTE interworking tests in a live network environment using commercial devices.” He also adds that “Now we are all set to launch 4G LTE services in Malaysia and look forward to rolling out these networks across various parts of the country in the next few years.”

Sandip added, “We also believe that network sharing is key to the deployment of networks faster across the country while optimizing industry investments and avoiding duplication. Therefore in July 2012, we signed an important agreement with Redtone to build common infrastructure following our sign up with U-Mobile.”

Consumers will see the 4G LTE service grow in the next few years as Maxis has already allocated RM500 million for network investment.

Celcom Axiata Berhad along with 7 other Service Providers have been awarded an allocation of the 2600 MHz spectrum band by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) a few days ago.

In a statement to the press, Celcom said that it has been allocated two 10 MHz blocks for its introduction of Celcom 4G LTE, following intensive network trials and Celcom’s nationwide network upgrading exercise to a single RAN (Radio Access Network) platform that allows it to implement speedy and seamless LTE (Long-term Evolution) upgrades across its current 2G and 3G network infrastructure.

Celcom 4G LTE will first be deployed in selected areas in the Klang Valley, Penang, and Johor’s Iskandar Malaysia growth corridor, including the Legoland theme park. The mobile operator also plans to invest up to RM300 million over the next three years on ongoing network modernisation that will fully support LTE technology.

Dato’ Sri Shazalli Ramly, Chief Executive Officer of Celcom Axiata Berhad, commented, “We aim to roll out our 4G spectrum in market centres across Malaysia over the next six months and our customers can now look forward to the next level of experience including blazing-fast data speeds, enhanced browsing and connectivity, and HD-quality video across their mobile devices.”

“Regardless of wherever they are within Celcom Territory, our customers will enjoy the advantages of our upgraded 4G network supported by Celcom’s current lightning-fast HSPA speeds nationwide which already supports speeds on par with global best-in-class performance.”

Apart from Celcom, the other 7 operators that received the LTE spectrum are DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd, Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd, Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd, REDtone Marketing Sdn Bhd, U Mobile Sdn Bhd and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd.

Maxis and REDtone have entered into an infrastructure and spectrum sharing agreement that will enable both players to speed up the deployment of their 4G LTE mobile networks. Together with REDtone, Maxis claims that, once built, its 4G LTE network will be able to deliver the fastest mobile data connectivity not just in Malaysia but in the region with transmission rates up to 150Mbps. Maxis say that the speeds that its next-gen network is capable of delivering will be two times above the theoretical limit of what the other local 4G operators can currently deliver.

Maxis is looking to launch is 4G LTE service “early next year” in parts of the Klang Valley with deployment to other regions “closely thereafter”. REDtone is expected to launch its mobile broadband service sometime in 2013.

“We are looking to set a new benchmark in data service quality,” Chief Executive Officer, Sandip Das

With a capital expenditure investment of RM3.7 billion in the past three years, Maxis say it is the biggest network investor in the country with 81% – or 5,200 sites – of its network now in high speed 3G. Out of those 5,200 3G sites, 3,400 are HSPA+ enabled capable of delivering speeds with a theoretical limit of 42Mbps.

Local operators have been playing the waiting game with LTE network as the money required to build such a network with enough coverage to make it useful to subscribers is immense. But as the demand for mobile data increase beyond the capacity of existing 3G networks, the need to shift to the next generation in mobile connectivity will be hard to ignore. Collaborations such as this is one way to speed things up as operators make more efficient use of the spectrum that is available to them while MCMC finalise its 2.6Mhz LTE spectrum allocation to operators.

Will we be seeing LTE phones next year? Yes but we believe when LTE networks come online within the first quarter of 2013 at the earliest, operators will offer data dongles and MiFis first before moving to dual-mode LTE phones and tablets that will still depend on 2G/3G networks for voice, text messaging and back-up data connectivity when LTE coverage is not available.

In any case, 2013 is going to a year to look forward to as 4G comes to Malaysia in a big way. As a result of that you can expect to see cost for broadband connectivity drop as well. We’re definitely looking forward to a next year.
