After two long years of trials, Maxis has finally announced that it is set to launch its 4G LTE service so Malaysians can enjoy even faster network speeds. This announcement follows the allocation of the 2600 MHz spectrum band for 4G LTE by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on December 5, 2012.

The LTE service will offer download speeds that are 10 times faster than 3G and will still work seamlessly with this standard. And since there are 5,200 sites providing 3G and HSPA+ coverage, users will still be able to enjoy their 4G LTE devices even when they are outside the 4G LTE area.

Sandip Das, Chief Executive Officer, Maxis commented, “Maxis was the first telco in Malaysia to complete extensive LTE field trials. We have been trialling 4G LTE for 2 years and conducting extensive LTE interworking tests in a live network environment using commercial devices.” He also adds that “Now we are all set to launch 4G LTE services in Malaysia and look forward to rolling out these networks across various parts of the country in the next few years.”

Sandip added, “We also believe that network sharing is key to the deployment of networks faster across the country while optimizing industry investments and avoiding duplication. Therefore in July 2012, we signed an important agreement with Redtone to build common infrastructure following our sign up with U-Mobile.”

Consumers will see the 4G LTE service grow in the next few years as Maxis has already allocated RM500 million for network investment.
