I use Orbit, for one reason alone: it is (still?) the only useful metalink downloader on the net. Still, it can’t handle metalinks automatically, it downloads them as regular files, and you have to add them from the local hard disk. Drag’n’drop metalinks don’t work.

Furthermore, this is a Windoze only app. It is cool if you’re using IE, but the Firefox extension is not so easy to use for video download. There are easier extensions to use with FF.

A good thing is, that it uses OrbitNet tohelp you find mirrors on the net. There are a few design clashes with the main window, otherwise it is simple and easy to use. Can monitor clipboard, does not support torrnet (hell, why shoud it?)

It can use cookies, but they have to be entered manually. The Firefox extension is unable to copy them straight away from the FF session.

Anyway, Grab Pro is a good feature for IE. Useful on MetaCafe, or websites that won’t allow you to download the video directly.

And that’s pretty much my experience with Orbit Downloader. Have been using FDM and FlashGet before, but Orbit seems to be better. If you really need a GUI.

    Otherwise, WGET rules 🙂

Oh, and one more thing. The Halloween version had some creepy ugly pumpkin-colored icons, and I had to wait weeks for the update to change it back. Why not skinnable? Or if not, why force that ugly Halloween and Birthday skins? Urgh.

And also. When you reinstall, it keeps starting up on system restart. You have to disable autostart again and again. How annoying. But at least you can. You can’t, on the other hand, disable the text along the toolbar buttons.

Can’t remember anything else for now… Here’s a list to compare to your favorite:

By the way, they could implement SFTP support. Why aren’t they using a robust backend, like cURL? Like every normal download manager?

    Bests,
    Attila
