WeChat Pay has started allowing cards issued outside of China to be loaded into their platform, opening up access to international customers.
The option will be available to expatriates living in China, as well as in “Greater China”, to residents from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, and will apply to cards issued by JCB, Mastercard and Visa.
This announcement marks the first opportunity for non-Chinese users to use the mobile wallet. The feature is expected to see a rapid adoption among the users that already use WeChat for other things, but until now could not add payment information.
WeChat Pay has already started forging partnerships abroad for Chinese tourists to pay using the mobile wallet at retailers throughout the world. The next step is expected to bring the opening of the mobile wallet to non-Chinese consumers.
